Technical Standards for the College of Dentistry, Howard University

Technical Standards

Upon recommendation of the Dean and faculty of the College of Dentistry, a student will be granted the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree which signifies that the recipient has demonstrated the knowledge, social and behavioral bearings, and skills deemed necessary to become a competent and compassionate healthcare provider.

A vital component of the dental education is the requirement of students to provide healthcare education and treatment for patients in the Howard University community and Washinton D.C. metropolitan area. Therefore,  it is the responsibility of the College of Dentistry’s faculty to ensure an environment of safety and respect for our patients.

It is our mission to admit students who will support this endeavor by: exhibiting a mastery of knowledge in scientific and health care areas; demonstrating hobbies that require a minimal level of technical abilities; possessing communication and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in extra-curricular activities and letters of support; and at all times, displaying professional attitudes and behaviors that personify and are expected of a dental professional.

It is the responsibility of the candidate for admission to review the technical standards for admissions. Accommodations for students with special academic needs are provided through  Office of Academic Affairs upon completing the appropriate processes for accommodations.

Critical Thinking

As mandated by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, we expect admitted students to show competency in developing their critical thinking by being able to:

  • Identify problems and formulate questions clearly and precisely;
  • Gather and assess relevant information, weighing it against extant knowledge and ideas, to interpret information accurately and arrive at well-reasoned conclusions;
  • Test emerging hypotheses against evidence, criteria, and standards;
  • Show intellectual breadth by thinking with an open mind, recognizing and evaluating assumptions, implications, and consequences;
  • Communicate effectively with others while reasoning through problems.

Motor skills

Successful students of dentistry should demonstrate competence and control in motor function to carry out various diagnostic and treatment procedures while manipulating a multitude of dental instruments and handpieces. Coordination of sight, touch, and manual dexterity with full functionality of the student’s wrists, hands, fingers and arms are essential to these requirements.

Students must be certified in basic life support emergency procedures, CPR, demonstrate proper ergonomics while rendering dental care sitting or standing;  operate and maneuver  dental equipment including carts, stools and dental chair, hand or foot controls, high- and slow-speed dental handpieces during dental treatment requiring controlled movements of less than 1-2 millimeter; perform dental procedures utilizing hand instruments on hard and soft tissues; and perform all necessary procedures in required educational exercises including activities in the preclinical laboratories prior to meeting the standards to render patient care in our clinics.

Sensory skills

Candidates must have functional use of the senses of vision, hearing, touch, and smell in order to observe and learn effectively in the classroom, laboratory and clinical settings and, ultimately, to provide oral health care in a practice setting. These sensory skills must be sufficient to allow the student to acquire information through physical, laboratory and clinical means; to visualize intraoral and extraoral structures; to observe a patient accurately both close at hand and at a distance; and to obtain information from written documents, films, slides and video, as well as to perform educational exercises, dental examinations, and treatment utilizing functions of touch (tactile sense using direct and indirect palpation); vision (acuity, accommodation and adequate color differentiation),  hearing (distinguishing sounds of auscultation and percussion, and discerning audible signs of distress from a patient); and smell (enabling observation and discernment of normal and abnormal odoriferous conditions related to either the patient or environment) to aid in the recognition of abnormal conditions of tissue during examination, diagnosis, and treatment.

These programs meet the educational requirements necessary for certification by the respective specialty boards. The five existing programs fulfill the accreditation requirements for postdoctoral specialty programs in dentistry as determined by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association and the Commission on Accreditation.

The level of instruction in the courses included in these programs is comparable to that of graduate dental courses. Research orientation, electives and research opportunities are included. A Certificate of Proficiency is awarded upon completion of the postdoctoral programs. In addition, separate internship and residency certificates are awarded to the oral and maxillofacial surgery and the general practice residency residents from Howard University Hospital.

General Dentistry Practice Residency Program | Graduate

The General Dentistry Practice Residency Program at Howard University is a one year postdoctoral education program which offers the dentist an opportunity for advanced comprehensive clinical experience in a hospital environment. Advanced Education in General Dentistry | Graduate

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program at the Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) is a one-year certificate-granting course of study and development which offers the newly or recently graduated dentist an opportunity to expand the capability to provide high-quality comprehensive clinical care to a diverse population.  The foundations of ethics, professionalism, compassion, and evidence-based practice are woven throughout our didactic and clinical activities.  Our program is accredited (most recent – 2017) by the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

The backbone of this program is exposing learners to a variety of meaningful clinical experiences, guided by engaged clinical faculty supervision and supported by daily coaching, assessment, and feedback.  The program director is a graduate of a two-year AEGD residency program and is a diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry, and our residents benefit from consistent endodontic, periodontic, and prosthodontic specialty faculty support during our in-house clinical sessions.  We employ modern modalities such as the axiUm electronic health record and MiPACS digital radiography, and complement conventional clinical techniques with rotary endodontics, intraoral laser, digital intraoral impressions, cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT), and computer-assisted design/manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology.

Most clinical services are provided within our AEGD clinical space; additional rotation sites include the Howard University Hospital (oral & maxillofacial surgery, anesthesia) and a local community-based general dentistry clinic for low-income clientele.  We aim to enhance knowledge and clinical competency across the spectrum of comprehensive dentistry, with the central philosophy of patient-centered, problem-based, phased treatment planning; the ability to thoroughly assess patients and then generate and execute predictable individualized plans is an expectation for successful matriculation.

The didactic curriculum includes biologic, diagnostic, and clinical sciences in both classroom and seminar formats, and case-based learning and application of principles to the clinical arena emphasized via various patient care conferences, literature reviews, resident-run topic vignettes, “grand case” treatment plan presentations, and collaboration with resident peers in the HUCD Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontic, and General Practice Residency programs.

Program Goals:

Consistent with the ADA CODA Accreditation Standards for Advanced Education Programs in General Dentistry, our program goals are to enable our graduates to:

  • Act as a primary care provider for individuals and groups of patients; this includes:
    • Providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care
    • Providing patient-focused care that is coordinated by the general practitioner
    • Directing health promotion and disease prevention activities
  • Plan and provide multidisciplinary oral health care for a variety of patients, including patients with special needs
  • Manage the delivery of oral health care by applying concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvement that are responsive to a dynamic health care environment
  • Function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care environments within interdisciplinary health care teams
  • Utilize the values of professional ethics, lifelong learning, patient-centered care, adaptability, and acceptance of cultural diversity in professional practice.
  • Understand the oral health needs of communities and engage in community service

Application Requirements:

  • Complete an online application via the  American Dental Education Association Postdoctoral Application Support Service (ADEA PASS) at www.adea.org.  Deadline for completion is September 1 for class beginning in July.  The PASS application is the only application required for this program.
